About the Item

A finely executed 19th-century Tibetan thangka depicting Vajrabhairava (Yamantaka), the fierce tantric manifestation of Mañjuśrī revered in Vajrayāna Buddhism as the conqueror of death, ignorance, and spiritual obstacles. The deity is rendered with exceptional precision in gold and polychrome pigments against a dramatic black-ground textile (nagthang), a format traditionally reserved for powerful protective and esoteric Buddhist imagery. The richly detailed composition is framed by a traditional red silk border and presented in a custom frame, allowing the intricate gold linework and vibrant pigments to be fully appreciated. Beneath the central composition is an inscription in Classical Tibetan (Uchen script), most likely a devotional or liturgical text associated with the deity. While a complete scholarly translation has not been undertaken, its presence reinforces the painting’s religious purpose and reflects traditional Tibetan workshop practice. Provenance Private Collection of Jared M. Kramer, Cartersville, Georgia. Dimensions Painting: 18.5 in. H × 15 in. W Frame: 26 in. H × 23 in. W × 2 in. D Condition Presented in a custom frame. Minor wear and expected fraying to the textile edges consistent with age. Small tears along the upper edge have been professionally stabilized during mounting. Minor superficial abrasion to the upper right corner. The painting retains its finely executed gold linework and richly preserved pigments, presenting beautifully overall. Minor scuffs and light wear to the frame consistent with age.
