About the Item

A highly detailed late 20th-century Tibetan Buddhist thangka depicting Shakyamuni Buddha, stated to have been found at Shechen Monastery, Tibet. Executed by hand on canvas using traditional rock and mineral pigments, the painting employs a particularly dramatic black-ground palette illuminated by extensive gold-toned detailing. The restrained use of blue, red and green provides contrast to the predominantly black and gold composition, while the elaborate textile mounting completes the work in the traditional thangka format. At the centre sits Shakyamuni Buddha, the historical Buddha Siddhartha Gautama, enthroned upon a lotus pedestal and framed by an intricately decorated aureole. He is represented in the traditional meditative form, his right hand extending downward in the bhumisparsha mudra, or earth-touching gesture. This refers to the moment of his enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, when he called upon the earth to bear witness to his awakening. The Buddha is surrounded by an exceptionally elaborate sacred landscape populated with attendant figures, celestial beings, lotus flowers, stylised clouds, mountainous formations and auspicious Buddhist imagery. Smaller enlightened figures appear above and alongside the principal Buddha, creating a densely layered devotional composition intended to convey a sacred spiritual realm. Shakyamuni, meaning "Sage of the Shakya Clan," is the name traditionally given to Siddhartha Gautama following his enlightenment. Buddhist tradition recounts that he renounced a privileged life in search of liberation from suffering, ultimately attaining enlightenment through meditation and teaching the path that became the foundation of Buddhism. Central to his teachings are the Four Noble Truths, which address the nature and cessation of suffering, and the Noble Eightfold Path, which presents a framework of ethical conduct, meditation and wisdom leading toward liberation. The painting is mounted within an elaborate silk brocade surround, predominantly black with contrasting gold, silver and blue patterned borders. Long burgundy textile ribbons and an olive-toned protective upper veil retain the appearance of a traditional Tibetan devotional hanging. The combination of the black ground, extensive gold decoration and finely articulated figures gives this thangka an especially powerful visual presence, suitable both as a Buddhist devotional work and as a highly decorative example of Tibetan religious art.
