About the Item

A superb Japanese glass painting from the 1920s by celebrated illustrator and artist Kasho Takabatake (1888–1966), depicting an elegant young beauty in traditional dress accompanied by a small cat. The composition is particularly charming, combining the refined depiction of the woman with richly patterned textiles and the playful presence of her feline companion. Takabatake was one of Japan’s most influential illustrators of the Taisho and early Showa periods. Born in Ehime Prefecture, he studied at the Kyoto City School of Arts and Crafts before moving to Tokyo, where he became a pupil of prominent Nihonga painter Kogyo Terasaki. His sophisticated images of fashionable young men and women became enormously popular through magazines and publications of the 1910s–1930s, and he is regarded, alongside Yumeji Takehisa, as an important figure associated with the romantic visual culture of the Taisho era. The glass panel measures approximately 48cm high x 31.5cm wide. The painting itself is in excellent condition. It is offered unframed, as the original frame was damaged in transit.
