About the Item

A striking Japanese bronze sculpture from Ryohei Miyata’s celebrated “Springen” series, depicting three dolphins ascending dynamically above a textured, wave-like formation. The composition captures Miyata’s signature sense of movement and fluidity, with the highly polished golden dolphins appearing to leap effortlessly upward from the contrasting sculptural base. Presented on its original wooden plinth with presentation plaque, the work is accompanied by a signed wooden storage box. The dolphin became Miyata’s defining motif and appears throughout his acclaimed Springen series, combining traditional Japanese metalworking techniques with a distinctly contemporary sculptural language. Ryohei Miyata (born 1945) was born on Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture into a family of metalworkers and studied metalsmithing at Tokyo University of the Arts, completing his graduate studies in 1970. He went on to become a prominent figure in Japanese contemporary metalwork and served as President of Tokyo University of the Arts, as well as Commissioner for Cultural Affairs in Japan. His work has been exhibited extensively in Japan and internationally. An elegant and highly decorative example of Miyata’s best-known body of work, combining accomplished Japanese metal craftsmanship with an instantly recognisable subject.
