Hand-Carved Sandalwood Jewelry Box by Rajasthani Artist, India

By Rajhastani

Located in Moreno Valley, CA

Hand-Carved Anglo-Indian Mughal Style Wooden Jewelry Box – Early 20th Century An elegant early 20th-century Anglo-Raj carved wooden box, finely handcrafted in India and richly decorated with continuous arabesque and floral relief carving throughout. The deeply detailed surface work reflects traditional Mughal-inspired craftsmanship, with scrolling foliage motifs executed in a cohesive decorative field across the lid and all sides. The hinged lid opens to a spacious interior lined in deep rust-red velvet, providing a rich contrast to the warm tone of the carved wood while offering a soft protective surface for jewelry, keepsakes, or collectibles. The shallow relief carving enhances the tactile quality of the piece, emphasizing the skill of its hand-executed workmanship. A refined example of Anglo-Indian decorative arts, this box functions beautifully as both a practical storage object and a statement collectible, suited for traditional, bohemian, or eclectic interiors. Origin: India Period: Early 20th Century Materials: Hand-carved wood, velvet lining Style: Anglo-Indian / Mughal Revival / Colonial Decorative Arts Condition: Good vintage condition with age-appropriate wear Keywords / Metadata: Anglo Indian box, Mughal carved box, Indian jewelry box, carved wooden trinket box, early 20th century Indian furniture, Anglo Raj decor, handmade wooden box, Islamic floral carving, Moorish style box, rustic carved box, vintage India box...

Antique Burmese Gilt Lacquer Sadaik Manuscript Chest on an Associated Stand

Antique Burmese Gilt Lacquer Sadaik Manuscript Chest on an Associated Stand

Located in Point Richmond, CA

Antique Burmese Gilt Lacquer Sadaik Manuscript Chest on an Associated Stand, late 19th century. The chest is constructed of teak covered in lacquer and gold leaf with a hinged lid and detailed decoration on four sides. The high relief thayo lacquer depicts narrative scenes from the Jataka tales, stories of the previous lives of the Buddha. Each tableau bordered by a tendril vine frame has reserve cartouches of birds or figures within. The narrative scenes are varied with a basic ground consisting of a field of linear components representing water and upright tendrils representing rice paddies. It is evident that a great journey is taking place with components such as wandering figures, elephants, deer, lions, serpents, tree spirits, foliage, trees and palaces rendered in relief. The elaborate high relief thayo lacquer is molded and modeled of a putty of lacquer sap mixed with clay, saw-dust, and/or ash. The interior and back are red lacquered. The large lid with overhanging lip is hinged at the back and a later interior brass side arm to prevent the lid from falling back. The added French style hardwood stand with cabriole legs, apron and shell designs appears to be of the same time period or possibly later. Condition: Minor lacquer losses and cracks around the lid frame. The gold leaf on the lid rubbed revealing the red lacquered ground. Other minor losses and restorations commensurate with age and use otherwise fine condition. Late 19th century. Size Overall: 38.75 in. high x 41 in. wide x 26.5 in. deep (98.5 x 104.2 x 67.3cm) Sadaik measures: 25 x 38.5 x 25.75 (63.5 x 97.7 x 65.4cm) Approximate Weight: 60 lbs. (27.2kg). Provenance: •Property of A Gentleman, 19 India Street, Edinburgh. •Christie’s South Kensington, 1 October 2002 “Holly House, Montrose And 19 India Street, Edinburgh Two Scottish Collections”, lot 298. •Olympia Antique Fair, London 2003 •William R. Eubanks Interior Design, Inc., Palm Beach, FL •Property from a Main Line Philadelphia Private Collector. •Freeman’s Chicago, European Furniture and Decorative Arts, January 27, 2026, lot 0297. •L’Asie Exotique, Palm Springs, CA Note: An old paper label affixed to the inside of the lid reads “Bought from Samuel in Oxford Street in 1909. It is old Burmese lacquer on a French teak stand.” It is possible that this chest was commissioned and sold by the trading firm F. Beato, Limited or a similar type of business. Felice Beato, the famous 19th century photographer of Asia set up his studio in Mandalay in 1890 and became a Burmese art dealer. According to his advertisements, he traded in wood carving, silverware, embroidery, ivory carving, silk and curios. This lucrative business thrived in collecting local artworks and selling them to the British. This business grew rapidly and soon opened branches in Rangoon, Colombo & London. The majority of Burmese manuscript chests...

Antique Phulkari Bawan Bagh Wedding Shawl, Silk Embroidery Punjab India
Antique Phulkari Bawan Bagh Wedding Shawl, Silk Embroidery Punjab India

Antique Phulkari Bawan Bagh Wedding Shawl, Silk Embroidery Punjab India

By Rajhastani

Located in Moreno Valley, CA

A rare pattern embroidered in silk on a hand loomed cotton background. Punjab is known for its Phulkaris. The embroidery is done with floss silk thread on coarse handwoven cotton fabric. Geometrical patterns are usually embroidered on the Phulkaris. Phulkaris and Baghs were worn by women all-over Punjab during marriage festivals and other joyous occasions. They were embroidered by the women for their own use and use of other family members and were not for sale in the market. The most favoured color is red and its shades, because Bagh and Phulkari are used during marriage and other festivals. Red is also considered auspicious by Punjabi Hindus and Sikhs. Phulkari (Punjabi) embroidery technique from the Punjab region of the Indian subcontinent, literally means flower work, which was at one time used as the word for embroidery, but in time the word “Phulkari” became restricted to embroidered shawls and head scarfs. Simple and sparsely embroidered odini (head scarfs), dupatta and shawls, made for everyday use, are called Phulkaris, whereas garments that cover the entire body, made for special and ceremonial occasions like weddings and birth of a son, fully covered fabric is called Baghs ("garden") and scattered work on the fabric is called "adha bagh" (half garden). This whole work is done with white or yellow silk floss on cotton khaddarh and starts from the center on the fabric called "chashm-e-bulbul" and spreads to the whole fabric. All of our textiles are handmade and original designs, the making of which takes a lifetime to learn through communities of artisans passing knowledge and techniques from one generation to another. Bawan Bagh Phulkari textile - Wedding Shawl...
