Art Nouveau Cast Iron Fireplace Mantel Surround, Brighton, 1903 A striking original Art Nouveau cast iron fireplace mantel surround, precisely dated to 1903 and displaying exceptionally crisp decorative casting characteristic of the period. The surround is richly ornamented with flowing decorative motifs associated with the Art Nouveau movement, creating an elegant architectural composition with considerable sculptural depth and visual presence. The quality and definition of the casting are particularly impressive, with the traditional dark finish highlighting the finer details throughout. Importantly, the fireplace retains its original cast iron mantel top rather than a later replacement, preserving the integrity and authenticity of the original design. An original registration number dates the fireplace to 1903. It was reclaimed from a period property in Brighton, England, adding further provenance and historical interest. The fireplace has undergone a comprehensive professional refurbishment. Historic layers of paint were painstakingly removed by hand rather than through shot blasting, helping to protect the cast iron surface and preserve the exceptional crispness of the original decoration. Following stripping, the entire fireplace was carefully wire brushed to both the front and reverse. Traditional grate polish was then applied and buffed by brush, producing a rich gunmetal appearance that accentuates the depth and definition of the Art Nouveau castings. The reverse has also been professionally prepared and spray painted, ensuring that the fireplace has been fully refurbished from front to back. A superb example of early 20th-century British architectural ironwork, combining documented 1903 dating, Brighton provenance, original components and distinctive Art Nouveau design.
