About the Item

A handsome antique cast iron fireplace surround dating from the late Victorian to Edwardian period, displaying the substantial construction and crisp architectural detailing characteristic of British cast iron fireplaces of the era. The surround has undergone a comprehensive professional refurbishment designed to preserve the quality and definition of the original castings. Historic layers of paint were painstakingly removed by hand rather than through shot blasting, a process that helps protect the original cast iron surface and retain the sharpness of its decorative features. Following stripping, the entire fireplace was carefully wire brushed to both the front and reverse. Traditional grate polish was then applied and buffed by brush, producing an attractive dark gunmetal finish while bringing out the depth and definition of the original cast decoration. The reverse has also been professionally prepared and painted, ensuring that the fireplace has been fully refurbished from front to back rather than solely refinished on the visible surfaces. Mounting lugs are incorporated into the outer body of the surround, allowing for straightforward and secure installation. A substantial and highly decorative example of British architectural ironwork, combining authentic period character with a professionally restored finish. An impressive focal point for a Victorian or Edwardian property, while its strong architectural form also lends itself beautifully to a more contemporary interior.
