About the Item

A striking Murano sommerso glass bowl produced in Italy during the 1970s, combining exceptional clarity with bold colour in a modernist style form. The bowl is formed in clear Murano glass with a circular pool of opaque red glass suspended within its centre. Its broad, shallow form and clean lines reflect a more modern direction in Venetian glassmaking, favouring sculptural simplicity and optical effects over applied decoration. The sommerso technique, in which coloured glass is encased within layers of clear crystal, is employed here to create a remarkable sense of depth. The vivid red centre appears to float within the transparent body, changing in intensity as light passes through the glass and highlighting the quality of the craftsmanship. Although unsigned, the bowl exhibits stylistic and technical characteristics associated with production by La Murrina during the period and bears similarities to contemporary designs linked to Lino Tagliapietra and Gianmaria Potenza. Condition is very good, with only minor wear and small surface irregularities to the exterior, some of which may be inherent to the manufacturing process.
