About the Item

A fine and substantial late 19th-century Swiss mechanical music box, dating to circa 1890, housed within an attractive walnut case with contrasting dark ebonised mouldings and delicate decorative inlay. The box contains a traditional cylinder mechanism playing four airs and is further distinguished by its zither attachment, designed to enrich the tonal quality of the music and produce a fuller, more resonant sound. This additional feature, together with the substantial case and quality of construction, makes it an appealing example of the sophisticated mechanical music boxes for which Switzerland became internationally renowned during the 19th century. The rectangular walnut case has a warm, beautifully aged surface, with fine linear inlay to the lid and dark contrasting borders. Its understated exterior gives way to the intricate mechanical movement within, combining precision engineering with traditional cabinetmaking. The mechanism is stated to be in working order. The case displays surface marks, rubbing, scratches and other age-related wear consistent with its considerable age, while retaining an attractive antique patina and strong decorative presence. A handsome and increasingly collectable example of Swiss mechanical music-making, ideal for collectors of antique music boxes, automata, musical instruments and 19th-century mechanical curiosities.
