About the Item

Artistic cabinet with architectural marquetry, 18th century A small table cabinet veneered in mahogany, with nine drawers and a central door, crowned by a pyramid-shaped finial added at a later date. The drawer fronts are decorated with fine marquetry in light-coloured wood, probably maple or pear. The designs feature stylised cityscapes: gates, arcades, towers and palm trees. This type of architectural marquetry is sometimes associated with the South German or Tyrolean cabinet-making tradition of the 17th and 18th centuries, and more specifically with a series of small devotional cabinets depicting architecture from the Holy Land. The interior bears the hallmarks of 18th-century construction. The crown moulding and possibly the side and rear panels were added later and are thought to date from the 19th century.
