About the Item

Sandoz Art Deco Porcelain Box Origin: France, Circa 1920 Porcelain box Fox or cat sculpture Green and white Created and hand-painted by Marcel Sandoz Manufactured by Theodore Haviland France, circa 1920. Box with a cat or fox figurine in green and white. Good overall condition. Edouard-Marcel Sandoz (1881-1971) was a French sculptor who worked in bronze, ceramics, and direct stone carving. Born in Basel and educated in Switzerland, Edouard Marcel Sandoz worked primarily in Paris, where he settled in 1908. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts with Antonin Mercié and Jean-Antoine Injalbert. Sandoz of Switzerland was most famous as an animal sculptor. Theodore Haviland - The Limoges Manufactory was created by David Haviland, who had a porcelain shop in New York and established a partnership with a manufacturer who could create porcelain pieces for the American trade. He was near the source of the abundant mines of kaolin, the special white clay unique to Limoges porcelain. He founded his own company in 1853 to produce porcelain specifically for that market.
