About the Item

A 19th century French casket, jewellery box made during the Napoleon III period and bearing the engraved signature “Alph. Giroux à Paris”. Maison Alphonse Giroux was one of the most celebrated luxury makers in Paris, known for supplying finely made objets to the French court. This example is covered in original silk velvet in a deep, faded plum tone, with a timeworn patina. It is adorned with gilt metal mounts, including charming figural putti to each corner and scrolling details throughout. The casket is complete with its original key, the lock is in working order. At the centre, a glazed panel frames a hand-painted depicting a lively Parisian-style square, possibly inspired by Place de la Concorde. Measurements: 24cm x 15cm x 14cm. Condition: Wear consistent with age, including fading and losses to the velvet and silk inside, wear to edges.
