About the Item

A small and beautiful Art Deco globe vase with amazing glaze. Made by Anna-Lisa Thomson for S:t Eriks Lervarufabriker in Sweden, 1930s. Great condition - no chips, cracks or crazing. Impressed with makers mark. Anna-Lisa Thomson (1905–1952) was one of Sweden’s most influential ceramic designers in the first half of the 20th century. Born in Gothenburg, she began her artistic career working at S:t Eriks Lervarufabriker in Uppsala, a company known for its high-quality building and decorative ceramics. At S:t Eriks, she gained early experience with clay and industrial production techniques, learning how to combine craftsmanship with the demands of larger-scale manufacturing. This foundation proved essential for her later work. In the 1930s, Thomson joined Upsala Ekeby, where her creativity flourished and her work became central to the factory’s identity. She developed a distinctive style characterized by sculptural forms, simplified natural motifs, and innovative glazes. Her vases, bowls, and decorative objects combined functionality with artistic expression, often drawing inspiration from nature, folk art, and the modernist design ideals emerging in Sweden. Thomson’s influence at Upsala Ekeby extended beyond her individual creations. She helped shape the company’s overall design philosophy, fostering collaboration between artists and production staff, and demonstrating that industrial ceramics could also be works of art. Her use of earthy tones, matte glazes, and organic shapes anticipated later trends in Scandinavian modernism. Some of her most celebrated works feature relief patterns of flowers, leaves, or abstract motifs, which remain highly sought after by collectors today. Throughout her career, Thomson bridged tradition and innovation. Her early exposure to industrial ceramics at S:t Eriks informed her understanding of production techniques, while her creative vision at Upsala Ekeby pushed Swedish ceramics into new artistic territory. Although she passed away in 1952, her legacy endures. Her work is recognized not only for its aesthetic beauty but also for its pioneering role in defining modern Swedish design, placing her among the key figures in 20th-century Scandinavian ceramics.
