About the Item

A rare 18th-century English enamel candlestick, attributed to South Staffordshire or Bilston production and dating approximately to the Georgian period, circa 1765-1775. The candlestick is made in enamel on copper, with a white ground decorated by hand-painted floral sprays, cobalt-blue reserves, and gilt scrollwork. The scalloped base, baluster-form stem, and rich painted decoration reflect the refined taste associated with English enamel production of the mid to late 18th century. Objects of this type formed part of the luxury decorative enamel tradition often associated with small Georgian “toys” and refined domestic accessories. Their brilliant enamel surface was admired for its decorative quality and for its visual relationship to porcelain. Comparable South Staffordshire and Bilston enamel candlesticks are represented in museum collections, including examples in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Attribution remains based on stylistic, material, and technical characteristics.
