About the Item

Pair of Large Bilston Enamel Candlesticks, Cobalt Blue with Gilt & Scenic Reserves, c1780 A rare and substantial pair of Bilston enamel candlesticks from South Staffordshire, England, dating to circa 1780. Crafted in the Rococo style on a copper base with a deep cobalt blue ground, these pieces feature elaborate raised gold gilding including lattice patterns, scrolls, and floral motifs. The reserved panels showcase hand-painted pastoral landscapes depicting figures in period attire amid serene trees, hills, and waterways, evoking the romanticism of the era. Standing at an impressive 14.5 inches tall with flared scalloped bases for stability and detachable bobeches adorned with small floral details, they exhibit minor age-related wear to the gilding and bases, consistent with authentic 18th-century enamels. Ideal for a collector's mantel or table display, these oversized examples highlight the opulence of Georgian decorative arts.
