About the Item

Antique American Bronze Black Americana Sculpture Johnny Griffin Inkwell American Bronze, glass c. 1900 Dimensions: H x W x D: 6.5cm x 8.5cm x 16cm Crafted around the turn of the 20th century in America, this figural bronze piece serves as an elegant and functional inkwell. The inkwell is cast entirely in bronze and depicts the face of a young boy, smiling broadly to reveal his teeth. His head is adorned with a hat with a hole on the left side designed to hold a pen. His upper body, clad in a ruffled shirt, emerges from the base and is complemented by organically shaped foliage. The boy’s head functions as a hinged lid, which, when lifted, reveals an inset glass inkwell and a small compartment for fountain pen nibs. The entire piece is finely cast, with intricate details such as the texture of the clothing and the carefully rendered facial features clearly recognisable. This particular design is well-known within the field of Black Americana antiques. The boy is often referred to as ‘Johnny Griffin’, though the origin of this name remains uncertain. The reverse of the piece bears several stamped numbers, likely indicating the pattern or model number. Exemplifying several trends in late 19th and early 20th century decorative arts, this antique inkwell is both visually striking and historically significant, making it a thought-provoking addition to any collection.

Antique German Oxidised Metal Figurative Pen Holder By WMF, Circa 1900

Antique German Oxidised Metal Figurative Pen Holder By WMF, Circa 1900

Located in Greven, DE

This charming antique sculpture was crafted by WMF, short for Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik, a renowned German manufacturer of fine metalware founded in 1853 and still in operation today. While best known for its tableware designs, WMF also produced a variety of decorative objects, including sculptures, exemplified by this delightful piece from our collection. The sculpture depicts a young boy dressed in typical late 19th to early 20th century working-class attire, including a flat cap. An apron tied around his waist suggests he is at work - possibly as a florist, as implied by the large scrolls cradled in his arms. These scrolls were originally aimed to be used as pen holders but can also serve to display other small items. Finely cast, the sculpture features intricate details such as fabric folds and hair texture, all enhanced by its monochrome oxidised finish. The figure stands atop an ornate Rococo style base adorned with C-scrolls, which also serve as the feet of the piece. The base is stamped ‘WMFB’, indicating both the manufacturer and the use of Britannia metal. Below this is the ‘OX’ mark, denoting that the surface has been oxidised - a process in which recessed areas are chemically darkened while raised surfaces are polished to a matte finish using pumice. An indistinct ’18’ mark is also stamped on the base. Blending stylistic elegance with technical craftsmanship, this antique pen holder...
