About the Item

Large Turned Thuya Burl Wood Sphere, France, Late 19th Century A beautifully figured and unusually large decorative sphere hand-turned from thuya burl, dating to the late 19th century. Celebrated for its richly variegated grain and naturally occurring “bird’s-eye” formations, thuya wood has long been prized by French craftsmen for its remarkable decorative qualities. This example displays an exceptional range of swirling patterns, deep amber and reddish-brown tones, and dramatic dark inclusions, all enhanced by a warm, lustrous patina acquired over more than a century. Perfectly spherical and expertly crafted, the piece transcends its simple form through the extraordinary character of the wood itself. Whether displayed on a desk, library table, cabinet, or within a curated collection of natural curiosities, it serves as both a sculptural object and a celebration of nature’s artistry. Objects of this type were popular in refined European interiors during the late 19th century, reflecting the era’s fascination with exotic materials, cabinetmaking virtuosity, and decorative objects inspired by the natural world. An elegant and highly decorative example, distinguished by its substantial size, beautiful coloration, and captivating organic patterns. Wear consistent with age and use.
