Carved Mahogany Relief of the Lion of Saint Mark with the Wheel of Saint Catherine A finely carved and deeply modeled wooden relief, depicting the iconic Lion of Saint Mark in a striking frontal pose, executed in dense, dark-stained mahogany with hand-rubbed patina and subtle verdigris accents in the recesses. The lion is rendered with dynamic energy, its luxuriant mane flowing into stylized wing feathers and curling around a heraldic shield, which replaces the traditional Gospel book. In an unusual and iconographically significant departure, the shield bears a deeply incised depiction of the Wheel of Saint Catherine—composed of eight radiating spokes with a central hub—suggesting a possible hybrid devotional or heraldic meaning. The lion’s head, with an open mouth and tightly clenched teeth, is crowned by a halo and flanked by alert, upwardly arched wings carved with strong parallel veining.
