About the Item

Here is an elegant and highly sculptural French Art Deco ceramic bird figure designed by Robert Lallemant and bearing the incised signature of J. Martel. Executed in a warm ivory crackle glaze, the composition captures the streamlined geometry and restrained sophistication that define French decorative arts of the 1930s. The bird's simplified form, elongated neck, and stylized wing details create a striking silhouette that is both modernist and timeless. The figure is mounted on an integral plinth base and finished in a finely crazed cream glaze that beautifully accentuates the sculptural modeling. The underside is marked "Lallement France," while the base retains an incised Martel signature, reflecting the collaboration between celebrated French designer Robert Lallemant and the renowned Martel brothers, Jan and Jöel, whose work helped shape the Art Deco aesthetic. A substantial decorative object that displays beautifully from every angle and would make an exceptional addition to a collection of French Art Deco ceramics, animalier sculpture, or modernist decorative arts. Dimensions Height: 12.63 in. (32.1 cm) Width: 7.13 in. (18.1 cm) Depth: 4.5 in. (11.4 cm) Condition Good vintage condition overall. There is a chip and possible restoration to the beak, along with minor edge roughness and small areas of wear consistent with age and use. The crackle glaze is original and presents attractively. Despite these minor imperfections, the sculpture retains a strong visual presence and displays exceptionally well.
