About the Item

A highly decorative and finely modeled pair of French Orientalist bronze busts, dating to the late 19th century and depicting two richly adorned female figures in elaborate North African or Middle Eastern dress. Each bust is cast in bronze with a deep brown patinated surface contrasted by extensive gilt detailing. The figures wear highly detailed headdresses, necklaces, earrings, embroidered bodices, ornamental trim and layered drapery, creating a striking interplay between the dark bronze patina and luminous gilt highlights. The elaborate chased decoration is especially evident throughout the jewelry, garment borders, headpieces and textile-inspired embellishments. The two female subjects are individually modeled rather than exact duplicates, each with distinct facial features, coiffure and costume details. One figure is shown with an elaborate jeweled headdress and cascading hair, while the companion wears a wrapped and ornamented head covering. Their serene expressions and carefully rendered features reflect the fascination with Orientalist subjects that flourished in French sculpture during the second half of the 19th century. Each bust rises from a circular bronze socle mounted upon a square gilt bronze base. The substantial scale, sophisticated casting and extensive gilt ornamentation give the pair a particularly luxurious presence. The work relates stylistically to the celebrated French Orientalist sculpture tradition associated with artists such as Émile-Coriolan-Hippolyte Guillemin, Charles Cordier, Henri Honoré Plé and their contemporaries, who became known for highly detailed depictions of North African, Middle Eastern and ethnographic subjects. In the absence of a confirmed signature, the present pair is offered as an accomplished French Orientalist work rather than with a definitive artist attribution. An especially attractive aspect of this set is that the figures form a true complementary pair, with differing costumes and physiognomies unified by their matching scale, materials, patination and gilt decoration. The busts would make an impressive statement displayed on consoles, pedestals, a mantel, library cabinets or within a sophisticated traditional, eclectic or maximalist interior. Their combination of sculptural quality, exoticism and richly worked surface makes them equally suitable for an important collection of 19th-century decorative arts or as dramatic architectural decoration. Condition: Very good antique condition consistent with age and use. The bronze retains an attractive aged patina with expected minor surface variation, rubbing and oxidation. Known for his Orientalist works in bronze and marble, Cordier gained inspiration from his visits to Algeria. The male figure of this pair is after a study made during one of these visits. The figures form a wonderfully contrasting pair. The male bust wears a more sombre, downturned expression, whilst the female smiles almost sleepily.
