Pair of Putti – Johann Valentin Sonnenschein, c. 1770–1780 This finely modelled group of two embracing putti is attributed to the Swiss sculptor Valentin Sonnenschein (active c. 1760–1800), who was a leading figure in the early Neoclassical movement in German-speaking regions. Executed in terracotta, the composition captures a moment of intimate affection, rendered with remarkable sensitivity and naturalism. The intertwined figures, standing in close embrace, exemplify Sonnenschein’s ability to combine classical ideals with a gentle, almost Rococo-like softness. Their rounded forms, subtle contrapposto and fluid interaction reflect a deep engagement with antique models while retaining a distinctly 18th century charm. The delicate treatment of anatomy and the nuanced expressions lend the group both sculptural clarity and emotional immediacy. Sonnenschein trained in the workshop of the Italian stuccatori Bossi and later worked under the influence of court artists such as Nicolas Guibal and Pierre François Lejeune in Stuttgart. His artistic language was shaped by the transition from late Baroque and Rococo to early Neoclassicism and was informed by contemporary discourse on antiquity, particularly the writings of Johann Joachim Winckelmann. Around 1774, Sonnenschein moved to Zurich, where he made significant contributions to the decorative programme of the house Zum Kiel. His works from this period demonstrate a refined synthesis of classical iconography and decorative function, often incorporating mythological and allegorical themes centred on love, the arts, and antiquity. The present sculpture relates closely to this artistic context: the motif of putti, emblematic of love and playful affection, frequently appears within 18th century decorative programmes and aligns with the thematic focus on Amor and classical mythology that characterised Sonnenschein’s oeuvre. This work is a compelling example of early Neoclassical sculpture, combining the sensual vitality of the Rococo with the clarity and restraint of classical form that was emerging at the time. It is both decorative and sculpturally accomplished, offering strong appeal to collectors of 18th century European art and those seeking to adorn refined interior settings.
