19th Century French Bronze Figural Sculpture “La Halte” by Louis C. Mennessier
This finely modeled antique bronze sculpture was crafted in France in the mid-19th century and depicts a French infantryman paused at rest, lighting his pipe while leaning against his rifle. Titled La Halte (“The Halt”), the figure is richly detailed with a double-breasted uniform, kepi cap, belt-mounted powder pouch, bayonet, and naturalistic folds in the coat. The composition captures a quiet, intimate moment from a soldier’s daily life, rendered with crisp realism and a warm, variegated brown patina. The conforming base is inscribed La Halte and signed L. Mennessier.
Louis Charles Justin Mennessier (1815–1859) is listed in the Benezit Dictionary of Artists as a 19th-century French sculptor noted for his military-themed bronzes and genre figures. Trained at the École Spéciale Militaire de Saint-Cyr, Mennessier pursued sculpture alongside his military career, producing a small but admired body of work distinguished by narrative clarity and precise attention to uniform detail. His death at the Battle of Magenta in 1859 curtailed a promising artistic trajectory, and surviving bronzes are sought after for both their rarity and historical resonance. Examples of his work are held in the Musée Condé.
