About the Item

This elegant antique sculpture titled “Le Duel” was crafted in France circa 1860 by noted sculptor Pierre-Louis Détrier (1822–1897). Cast in bronze and later re-silvered to a brilliant luster, the piece portrays a refined Renaissance gentleman pausing mid-gesture, sword in hand, captured with an expressive realism typical of Détrier’s finely modeled works. The figure’s plumed hat, ruffled collar, and pleated doublet exemplify the artist’s attention to costume and theatrical flair. Signed Detrier on the base, the sculpture rests on its original circular plinth and remains in excellent condition, commensurate with age and use. A pupil of Jean-Baptiste Auguste Gayrard, Détrier regularly exhibited at the Salon de Paris from 1866 through the 1890s, producing allegorical and historical subjects such as L’Amour Maternel (1883) and Un Amateur (1888). Many of his bronzes were cast by the celebrated Raingo Frères foundry. His work reflects the refinement and romanticism of late-19th-century French academic sculpture, making this signed example a sophisticated addition to any study or collection. Measures: 14.5" H.
