About the Item

To the right of Asclepius and to the left of Hippocrates, a monogram composed of an M crossed by a triangle and, below, an L. Dimensions: 57 x 32 x 27 cm (each bust). LOT DETAILS French school, circa 1900. "Asclepius and Hippocrates". Direct stone sculpture. To the right of Asclepius and to the left of Hippocrates, a monogram consisting of an M crossed by a triangle and, below, an L. Dimensions: 57 x 32 x 27 cm (each bust). Pair of carved stone busts representing Asclepius, Greek god of medicine, and Hippocrates, considered the father of Western medicine. These two sculptures, conceived as a whole, establish an iconographic dialogue between the mythological origins of medical practice and its later rational and scientific foundation. Asclepius is identified by his traditional attribute, the staff adorned with the coiled snake - a universal symbol of medicine - and by the Greek alphabet inscription on the front: ?????????. Hippocrates, meanwhile, is inscribed with his name in Latin capital letters: HIPPOCRATES, underlining the historical and humanist dimension of classical medicine. Formally, the pieces are inspired by portrait models from Greco-Roman antiquity, reinterpreted through the prism of late 19th century historicist taste. The direct sculpture in stone, with its austere surface and clearly structured volumes, reflects the academic revival of the classical ideal, characteristic of the French artistic milieu around 1900. The work has not only a decorative value, but also a symbolic and intellectual one: it represents the continuity between sacred and empirical medicine, a duality particularly celebrated in institutional contexts, such as medical faculties, scientific laboratories and scholarly collections, at the turn of the century.
