About the Item

Beautiful figurine group Meissen Knaufzeit. Depiction: Rape of the Sabine Woman. Design by Johann Joachim Kaendler. Manufactured around 1900. Underglaze blue crossed swords Meissen 1st choice Knaufzeit. Height approx. 17 cm. Form number 1919 and painter number 29. No damage The Rape of the Sabine Women: The Romans lack women, and the surrounding cities refuse them the right to marry. So the Romans hold festivals, on the occasion of which they steal the daughters of their neighbors. This leads to several wars, the last and heaviest of which is with the Sabines, who, through the treachery of Tarpeia, have taken possession of the fortress on the Capitoline Hill. After alternating fortunes in battle, the intervention of Jupiter, and after the Sabine leader Mettius Curtius nearly sinks in a swamp, the abducted Sabine women end the war by pleading that fathers and husbands should not kill each other. As a result, the two kingdoms are united, and Rome becomes the common capital.
