About the Item

Set of two porcelain figurines in the style of Meissen depicting the "Abduction of the Sabine Women"a historic episode from Roman mythology that is traditionally attributed to Romulus, the founder and first king of Rome. According to the myth, shortly after the founding of Rome, the city lacked women, as it was predominantly populated by men. In order to address this issue and ensure the survival and growth of the city, Romulus and the Roman men devised a plan to acquire wives for themselves. The Romans invited the neighboring Sabines to a festival, known as the Consualia, in honor of the god Consus. During the festivities, the Roman men suddenly seized the Sabine women and abducted them to become their wives. This act was seen as necessary to populate the city of Rome and ensure its future. The abduction of the Sabine women has been a popular subject for artists throughout history. Many painters, sculptors, and other artists have been inspired by this myth and have created works of art based on it. *Signed on base Dimensions: 19"H × 19.5"W × 19.5"D
