About the Item

Elegant bronze sculpture of Mercury, inspired by the celebrated model traditionally attributed to Giambologna (1529–1608), one of the most influential sculptors of the late Renaissance. Cast in Naples, Italy, during the 1950s, this sculpture faithfully captures the grace, movement, and refined elegance that made the original composition one of the most iconic images of Classical mythology. Mercury, known as Hermes in Greek mythology, is represented as the swift messenger of the gods, protector of travelers, merchants, and communication. The figure is portrayed in a dynamic and elevated pose, embodying the lightness and fluidity that characterize Giambologna's masterpieces. The elongated proportions and sense of upward movement are hallmarks of the Mannerist style, creating a sculpture that appears almost weightless. Cast in bronze and finished with a rich patina, the work displays excellent detail in the anatomy, facial features, drapery, and mythological attributes. Produced in Naples, a city renowned for its centuries-old tradition of bronze casting and classical sculpture, the piece reflects the exceptional craftsmanship of mid-20th-century Italian workshops. Its elegant proportions and classical subject make it ideal for display in a library, gallery, entrance hall, office, or collection of Renaissance-inspired and mythological art. A refined and highly decorative sculpture celebrating one of the most famous creations of European art.
