About the Item

A magnificent cross-section of the famed pallasite meteorite, Seymchan, recovered from the bed of the river Hekandue in the Russian Far East, and revealing the honeycomb-like structure characteristic of pallasites. Comprising 0.2% of all meteorites, pallasites are the rarest and most dazzling examples, and are highly sought after by collectors and museums. This cross-section reveals their mesmerising internal structure, consisting of gems of semi-precious and translucent olivine suspended in a shimmering iron-nickel matrix. On one side, the surface has been polished to a mirror finish, revealing the ethereal translucency of the crystals when complimented by the elegant, silver matrix. On the other, the surface has been etched to reveal the natural, crystalline structure of the metal, known as the Widmanstatten pattern. Unique to extraterrestrial iron, this intricate structure is created by the extremely slow rate at which the molten metal of the meteor cooled over millions of years in the vacuum of space. A mesmerising piece of natural history and timeless reminder of the forces of nature. Presented a sleek, custom bronze mount. Provenance Discovered in 1967, Magadan District, Russia (62° 54’ N, 152° 26’ E). Published Meteoritical Bulletin, no. 43, Moscow (1968). Condition A cut and polished cross section of the Seymchan meteorite displaying beautiful olivine crystals. Presented on bespoke bronze base. Please note that this item is a work of art and is thus exempt from US reciprocal tariffs.
