About the Item

World's earliest known pyrography vessel, Nazca Culture , circa 400 AD This unique work of art is a hand-incised half gourd using an early pyrographic (pyrography) wood burned technique that depicts in a circular band four stylized birds amidst embedded mother of pearl disc shaped inserts. . Dimensions: 3 inches high and 5.5 inches diameter Hand carved gourd, hand burned exterior using pyrographic techniques with inlays of mother of pearl discs (note a few discs missing). Provenance: Auction House Arte Primitivo 2007 (see documents) History of the Pyrography: Pyrography is the art or technique of decorating wood or leather by burning a design on the surface with a heated metallic point. Pyrography was particular popular during the last quarter of the 19th century and first quarter of the 20th century. In rare instances, the pyrography decorative technique was combined with hand painting using stains and oils and producing largely unique works of art like this bench. We will be offering more important high quality folk pyrography works of art in the near future. We have been collecting and dealing in authentic American Folk Art pyrography works of art for more than twenty five years. Our president has authored informative articles on collecting pyrography and has amassed a large collection which is now being deaccessioned. Write or contact us for more information. All works of art are guaranteed authentic and as described.

Large Carved and Incised Wooden Bowl from the Taureg Tribe in Mali, Africa

Large Carved and Incised Wooden Bowl from the Taureg Tribe in Mali, Africa

Located in Chicago, IL

This wood bowl from the Tuareg tribe in Mali has a quiet, grounded presence, shaped by hand and time. Its softly rounded form is animated by incised geometric bands that circle the vessel, the repeating lines and crosshatched motifs catching light and shadow as the surface curves inward. The dark, earthen patina suggests long use and careful handling, giving the bowl a sense of history and intimacy. Subtle variations in tone and texture reveal the maker’s touch, where utility and ornament are inseparable. Today, bowls like this are often appreciated as decorative objects rather than everyday wares. They are used as sculptural accents on shelves or tables, as containers for dried botanicals or found objects, or simply displayed on their own to highlight their craftsmanship. In contemporary interiors, they bring warmth, material depth, and a connection to African artisanal traditions, bridging past function with present-day aesthetic appreciation. African Wooden Bowl...
