About the Item

A striking late 19th-century French Japonisme centerpiece or planter, exquisitely crafted in richly glazed cobalt blue porcelain and lavishly mounted in finely chased gilt bronze. Dating to the height of the Aesthetic Movement, this impressive decorative object beautifully reflects the fascination with Japanese-inspired design that swept through France during the latter half of the 19th century. The generously proportioned porcelain bowl, finished in a deep, lustrous cobalt blue glaze, is encircled by an elaborate gilt bronze gallery cast in the form of an open crown. Graceful openwork handles, ornamented with dragons, rise elegantly from either side, while the bowl rests upon three finely modeled foliate feet centered by expressive grotesque masks. The exceptional quality of the bronze mounts, with their crisp chasing and warm gilded finish, provides a striking contrast to the luminous porcelain body. Elegant in both scale and design, this versatile piece was originally intended as a centerpiece or jardinière and remains equally suitable today as a cachepot, floral centerpiece, or decorative focal point on a dining table, console, or mantel. The combination of vibrant cobalt porcelain with richly detailed gilt bronze exemplifies the refined craftsmanship of the French decorative arts during the Belle Époque, when designers embraced both Renaissance Revival ornament and the newly fashionable influence of Japanese aesthetics. Presented in very good antique condition, with minor wear and a mellow patina to the gilt bronze consistent with age and use. The porcelain retains its rich, even cobalt glaze. Measurements: 14.5 in. H × 15.5 in. Diameter (37 × 39.4 cm). Interior neck diameter: 8 in. France, circa 1880–1890.
