About the Item

A magnificent and highly decorative French Japonist faience vase, Saint-Denis manufactory, dating from the late nineteenth century, circa 1880–1890. This impressive example embodies the fascination with Japanese art and design that swept through France during the Aesthetic Movement and the height of the Japonisme period. The vase is executed in a richly glazed deep crimson ground and lavishly decorated with brilliantly colored exotic birds in flight amidst flowering branches, foliage, and stylized botanical motifs inspired by Japanese woodblock prints and naturalistic design. The quality of the decoration is particularly noteworthy, displaying remarkable attention to detail, vibrant enamels, and exceptional artistic execution. The composition wraps gracefully around the entire body of the vase, creating a dynamic and visually captivating scene from every angle. The vase is further enhanced by its original gilt bronze mounts, including an elegant pierced crown-form rim, scrolling side handles, and an ornate rocaille-inspired base. The combination of finely modeled bronze work and richly colored faience reflects the sophisticated decorative arts produced in France during the final decades of the nineteenth century. An impressed Saint-Denis factory mark appears on the underside. With its striking scale, vibrant palette, and strong Japonist influence, this vase represents a superb example of French decorative arts from the Belle Époque period and would make an outstanding addition to any collection of Aesthetic Movement, Japonisme, French faience, or nineteenth-century decorative arts.
