About the Item

A beautiful Scandinavian Modern ceramic vase with amazing glaze. Designed by Eva Jancke-Björk for Bo Fajans, Sweden, 1940s. Great condition. Makers marks on base of vase. Eva Jancke-Björk (1882–1981) was a pioneering figure in Swedish design, whose multifaceted career spanned ceramics, textiles, and graphic design. Educated at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts, her work is celebrated for its innovation and aesthetic depth, contributing significantly to the development of early 20th-century Scandinavian design. Among her most notable contributions are her textile designs for the Swedish Pavilion at the 1925 Paris Exposition, which showcased her ability to blend traditional Swedish motifs with modernist sensibilities. Jancke-Björk's designs for the NK (Nordiska Kompaniet) department store's textile department further cemented her reputation, particularly her avant-garde fabric prints that harmoniously combined function with artistic expression.

By Upsala Ekeby, Ingrid Atterberg

Located in Grythyttan, SE

Exquisitely crafted by renowned ceramist Ingrid Atterberg for Uppsala Ekeby, this black, white and grey chamotte vase with a distinctive handle and rough surface epitomizes mid-century Scandinavian modern design. Ingrid Atterberg (1920–2008) designed many classic pieces for Upsala-Ekeby between the 1940s and 1960s. One of her most well-known series is "Progresso," created in 1958. This collection consists of eight earthenware items, including vases and bowls, characterized by their textured surfaces and rustic appearance. Each piece is deeply stamped on the underside with "UE," "Sweden," "Abg," and the model number. The "Progresso" series was produced until 1959. The vase has the shape of a classical urn and a swelling shape with a unique hand-decorated finish, making each piece truly one-of-a-kind. Standing at a height of 16 cm, this vase model, numbered 2358, to Upsala-Ekeby's era-typical craftsmanship and aesthetic sensibility. Marked with a deep stamp indicating UE Sweden, 2358, and Abg. Marked with the impressions UE Sweden, product numbers, and Abg, each piece bears the hallmark of Atterberg's distinctive style and craftsmanship.
