About the Item

A masterful studio glass sculpture by the renowned duo Monica Guggisberg and Philip Baldwin. This piece dates to 1996—a pivotal moment during their Swiss period in Nonfoux. It represents a fascinating era in their career where the duo perfected the iconic, minimalist silhouettes that would become their hallmark, yet prior to their shift toward the intensive coldworking and battuto techniques of their later oeuvre. Expertly crafted using the complex Incalmo technique, the sculpture features two separately blown elements fused while hot. An opaque, vibrant red body is seamlessly joined to a clear part with internal black canes. The clear part with the canes was opened and rotated on the pipe during the blowing process to create that "propeller" kinetic effect—a detail captured in the accompanying video. While this unique workshop piece possesses a bold vibrancy, it clearly echoes the structural elegance that later earned the duo international acclaim and a prestigious collaboration with Venini. Having been featured in solo exhibitions at major institutions in Frankfurt, Geneva, and Ebeltoft, Baldwin and Guggisberg remain titans of contemporary glass; this 1996 work offers a rare opportunity to own a "one-of-a-kind" piece from their foundational years.
