About the Item

An impressive and monumentally scaled French 19th century Neo-Greek st. Ormolu and Rouge Griotte Marble vase, attributed to Barbedienne. This stunning vase is raised on a triangular shaped base with concave sides decorated with acanthus leaves, palmettes and a beaded trim. Above is a mottled Griotte marble plinth below a central stem and three pawed legs with foliate designs. The body of the vase is encased in stunning Ormolu mounts of Victory,with open wings and holding laurel wreaths. Each Victory is joined by intricately scrolled and pierced Ormolu mounts, with lion head masks holding rings in their mouths. Each lion is surrounded by a stunning foliate ring accented with berried and foliate designs. The neck of the urn is etched with flower and palmette designs below and above an Ormolu band adorned with rosettes. Above are three scrolled Ormolu mounts which surround the foliate rim and the smooth finished patinated interior. Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810 - 1892) was a renowned French metalworker and bronze founder. Between 1850 and 1854 his firm , Barbedienne, provided furnishings in the Renaissance Revival style for the Hôtel de Ville, Paris. They received numerous medals at the International Exhibitions, including medals in three different classes at the International Exhibition of 1862 in London.
