About the Item

Large red ceramic Atelier vase designed by Gerda Heuckeroth for Carstens Tönnieshof in West Germany between 1962 and 1964. Identified as model C.-823/36, the vase has a broad rounded body, softly curved shoulders and a short cylindrical neck, giving the substantial form a balanced silhouette. The surface is finished in a vivid high-gloss red glaze, interrupted by dark vertical accents and subtle variations in tone. Rather than relying on heavy relief or applied ornament, the design draws its impact from proportion, saturated color and the movement of the glaze. The calm form keeps the expressive finish controlled and makes the vase easy to place in both modern and eclectic interiors. Gerda Heuckeroth was one of the best-known designers associated with postwar West German ceramics. She worked for several major factories, including Ruscha, Ceramano, and from 1964, Carstens Tönnieshof. Her designs are appreciated for combining clear, balanced forms with more experimental surface treatments. Carstens Tönnieshof was the West German continuation of the Carstens ceramic business, re-established in Fredelsloh after World War II. From the 1950s to the 1970s, it became one of the key names in West German pottery, known for bold forms, expressive glazes, and a strong decorative identity. The company filed for bankruptcy in 1977.
