About the Item

An Iznik-style polychrome vase in the Lindus decor, hand-painted in blue, ochre, green, and terracotta on a matte glaze, made by the Arnhemsche Fayencefabriek in the Netherlands, circa 1910s. The decor most likely takes its name from Lindos, on the island of Rhodes — long associated in Europe with the colorful Ottoman pottery once called "Rhodian" ware and now known as Iznik. Around 1916, Klaas Vet drew on that tradition for one of the Arnhemsche Fayencefabriek's most distinctive decors, translating its symmetrical rosettes and stylized florals into the factory's own matte-glaze idiom of Dutch Art Nouveau, the Nieuwe Kunst. The baluster form rises from a splayed foot to a flaring trumpet neck. Tall panels divide the body: the principal panel centers on a symmetrical flowering stem crowned by a large rosette medallion — concentric rings of green, ivory, and terracotta set against deep blue — flanked by broad scalloped forms worked in fine black linework. The alternating panels carry a smaller rosette and a stem of dotted leaflets within a terracotta cartouche, scattered with small flowers. A stylized foliate border bands the green neck. The decoration is the work of a skilled decorator at the Arnhemsche Fayencefabriek, hand-painted in the matte-glaze technique the factory developed from its roots at De Distel. The palette of blue, ochre, green, terracotta, and ivory belongs to the Lindus line, which the factory produced in both a white-flower and a blue-flower version; this is the blue-flower variant. Fine crazing across the surface is consistent with the matte glaze and the age of the piece. The Lindus decor is documented in the standard reference on the factory, Martens and Steenaert's monograph of 1997. Condition: the vase has been restored at the foot, where chips have been filled and overpainted to match the surrounding glaze; the restoration is visible on close inspection (see photographs). The painted decoration on the body is well preserved. The base is signed and marked, with the decor name "Lindus" hand-painted and the shape number 281. About Arnhemsche Fayencefabriek: The Arnhemsche Fayencefabriek was founded in 1907 by brothers Klaas and Jacob Vet, who had trained in the Dutch art-pottery tradition at Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland and De Distel. Klaas led the designs; Jacob ran the business. The factory became known for hand-painted decorative earthenware in matte glazes, with forms indebted to De Distel and Rozenburg. The Lindus decor, introduced between 1910 and 1917, dates from the factory's most artistically ambitious years.

An Iznik-style vase made by Edmé Samson et Cie after a 16th-century Turkish bottle vase in the collection of the Musée d'Ecouen. The vase’s bulbous body is decorated in a red, cobalt blue, turquoise, and green floral design of saz leaves, roses, and tulips. The neck is decorated with delicate floral sprays. The design is highlighted with gilding throughout, and is intentionally sparse around the turquoise area of the neck to mimic the wear of the 16th-century vase after which it was modelled. As with many other Samson Iznik...
