About the Item

An extraordinary, large museum-quality porcelain vase, extremely intricately hand-painted in the Kutani Mokubei style against a striking high-purity gold ground, using yellow, green, purple, and blue — the traditional colors that have defined Kutani porcelain for centuries. This vase is the final piece in a series of Mokubei-inspired works carrying the "Kutani Tousui" imprint, produced in the early 21st century. The style takes its name from Aoki Mokubei (1767–1833), a designer and porcelain artist who drew on 17th- and 18th-century Chinese porcelain and adapted it for Japanese sensibility. He worked during a period when Kutani kilns were actively seeking to recapture the glory of Ko-Kutani, the region's earliest and most celebrated porcelain tradition; the styles that emerged from this effort became known as Revived Kutani, with Mokubei's own approach among its most beloved. His designs drew on nanga, or "Southern painting," a school of Japanese literati art inspired by Chinese scholarly painting traditions — a notable source of inspiration at a time when Japan had all but closed its doors to the outside world under its national seclusion policy. The Mokubei style is characterized by calming red pigments as its base, with compositions often depicting figures, frequently including children, set against vibrant, ornate backgrounds arranged into harmonious, densely detailed designs. A later refinement saw some Kutani artisans experiment with replacing the style's traditional deep ochre background with pure gold — a technically demanding substitution that only a few artisans mastered well enough to satisfy their patrons, the Maeda clan. To achieve maximum luster, they settled on 21-karat gold, applied with a fine brush to semi-porcelain formulated specifically to absorb and enhance the metal's brilliance.
