About the Item

Mari Simmulson (1911–2000) was one of the most influential ceramic artists associated with Upsala Ekeby and played a central role in shaping the company’s artistic identity during the post-war decades. Joining the factory in the late 1940s, she introduced a distinctive visual language characterized by sculptural forms, expressive silhouettes, and richly glazed surfaces. Her work blended Scandinavian modernism with a lyrical, almost organic sensibility, making her creations instantly recognizable and highly sought after by collectors today. Founded in 1886, Upsala Ekeby evolved from a brickworks into one of Sweden’s foremost ceramic manufacturers. During the mid-20th century, the company became internationally celebrated for its collaborations with leading designers, including Mari Simmulson, Vicke Lindstrand, Ingrid Atterberg, and Anna-Lisa Thomson. Together they established Upsala Ekeby as a defining name in Scandinavian design, renowned for exceptional craftsmanship, innovative glazing techniques, and timeless artistic expression. This vase beautifully reflects Mari Simmulson’s refined aesthetic. Its elegant proportions, sculptural profile, and vibrant glaze demonstrate the balance between artistry and craftsmanship that made her work so admired. More than a decorative object, it is an authentic example of Swedish mid-century ceramic design from one of Scandinavia’s most respected manufacturers, making it an enduring addition to any discerning collection.
