About the Item

An exceptional early work by renowned Dutch glass artist Mieke Groot, dating to 1982. This hand-blown studio glass vase features a sophisticated construction: a core of opaque white glass encased in a clear layer. The exterior is masterfully decorated with applied gold foil, which was purposefully crackled during the blowing process. This technique creates a shimmering, organic texture that contrasts beautifully with the minimalist form of the vessel. The piece perfectly captures the experimental spirit of the European Studio Glass movement of the early 1980s. Maria Margaretha Cornelia Anna (Mieke) Groot (b. 1949) is a seminal figure in contemporary Dutch glass art. Originally trained in jewelry design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, she transitioned to glass in the mid-1970s, opening her own studio in 1976. Throughout the 1980s, she served as the influential Director of the Glass Department at the Rietveld Academie. Groot’s works are held in prestigious permanent collections worldwide, including: Corning Museum of Glass (New York) Victoria and Albert Museum (London) National Glasmuseum (Leerdam, Netherlands) Musée des Arts Décoratifs (Paris) Hand-engraved signature to the base: "MIEKE GROOT '82" For a similar example/comparative technique, see: C. Schack von Wittenau, Neues Glas und Studioglas, Coburg, 2005, pp. 148–149. Excellent vintage condition.
