About the Item

Paul Dachsel Amphora Teplitz Iridescent Green Art Nouveau Vase Austrian Amphora Turn-Teplitz Art Nouveau six-handled ceramic vase attributed to Paul Dachsel, circa 1900–1905. The substantial organic form is modeled with six deeply ribbed handles descending from a circular neck. Each handle curves diagonally across the body before merging into the lower vessel, suggesting twisting stems, vines, or elongated leaves. The vase is finished in a complex, slightly iridescent green glaze with shifting passages of teal, blue-green, olive, bronze, and deep violet. Fine glaze crazing emphasizes the modeled ridges and changing contours. Rather than relying on painted decoration, the design integrates the handles directly into the vessel, allowing its sculptural construction and variegated glaze to provide the ornament. The form relates closely to progressive Jugendstil ceramics produced in the Turn-Teplitz region of Bohemia, then part of Austria-Hungary. It is particularly associated with the work of Amphora and designer Paul Dachsel, whose ceramics frequently incorporated elongated applied handles, organic structural ornament, and subtly metallic tertiary glazes. Dachsel worked with Amphora before establishing his independent Kunstkeramik Paul Dachsel workshop in 1905. An apparently identical unmarked six-handled vase of the same approximate dimensions has previously been cataloged at auction as Austrian Art Nouveau, with comparisons to the Turn-Teplitz and Zsolnay ceramic traditions. The attribution to Paul Dachsel is based on form, glaze, and documented comparison rather than a visible factory mark. Dimensions: 13.5 in. H × 7 in. diameter. Base: 4.5 in. diameter. Opening: 4 in. diameter. Good antique condition with glaze crazing, scattered scratches, minor glaze losses, and firing irregularities. Later felt pads and writing underneath. Unmarked.
