About the Item

Royal Worcester Art Deco Turquoise and Gilt Anthemion Leaf Vase, 1932 A Royal Worcester Art Deco porcelain vase in turquoise, celadon, russet, and gold, England, dated 1932. Factory shape number 2862. The molded porcelain vase has a strongly fluted trumpet form terminating in a broad, faceted, and gently scalloped mouth. Its lower body is encircled by overlapping anthemion- or palmette-inspired leaves, creating a repeated architectural border characteristic of Art Deco ornament. The foliage is modeled in relief with incised veins and graduated coloring in cream, pale celadon, olive green, and warm russet. Fine gilded outlines define the pointed leaves, while raised gilt berry or seed-pod sprays emerge between them. The upper body is finished in a luminous seafoam-green and turquoise glaze. Darker shading within the vertical flutes emphasizes the vase’s geometric construction and upward movement. The design combines classical anthemion ornament with the stylized botanical vocabulary inherited from the English Aesthetic Movement and designers such as Christopher Dresser. That influence is stylistic only; the vase is not documented as a dresser design. The underside bears the puce Royal Worcester crowned factory mark with three linked circles, the date cipher for 1932, together with “Made in England.” The central “51” records the factory’s founding in 1751 and is not a date mark. Hand-numbered 2862, identifying the factory shape. No individual designer or decorator is recorded. Dimensions: 6.5 inches high × 5.25 inches diameter. Base: 2.75 inches diameter. Condition: Very good vintage condition with a light surface and gilt wear consistent with age. Minor firing specks and small glaze irregularities are visible; no major damage is observed.
