About the Item

A striking monumental wine rack attributed to Arthur Umanoff, dating to the mid-20th century, circa 1960s. Exceptionally tall and architectural in scale, the piece combines a slender geometric framework of welded iron with rows of beautifully aged cognac-brown saddle leather bottle cradles. The open iron framework is finished in a warm ivory/cream tone, providing a handsome contrast to the rich patina of the leather. Individual leather slings are wrapped around horizontal iron supports and secured with metal rivets, creating a rhythmic grid of suspended bottle holders. Fully loaded, the bottles become part of the design itself, transforming the rack into a dramatic sculptural display. The combination of iron and saddle leather, straightforward construction, and functional modernist aesthetic is strongly associated with the work of Arthur Umanoff and furniture produced by Shaver Howard during the 1950s and 1960s. Its unusually tall, narrow proportions make this example particularly striking and ideal for a wine cellar, dining room, restaurant, bar, or sophisticated mid-century interior. The rack retains considerable vintage character and shows evidence of alterations to the painted finish over its lifetime. At some point, a spatter-style paint treatment was applied to portions of the iron framework; the majority of this later finish has subsequently been removed. Areas of an underlying yellow-toned paint as well as exposed bare metal are visible throughout, creating a layered, time-worn surface. Additional age-appropriate oxidation, paint loss, scratches, marks and general wear are present. The saddle leather has developed a beautifully varied patina, with differences in color, surface wear and areas of dryness consistent with decades of use. Three leather bottle slings have received a functional repair using a bolt and nut rather than the original riveted hardware. Please review photographs closely for the overall condition and finish. A wonderfully graphic and highly functional piece of mid-century design that reads equally well as furniture, wine storage, and architectural sculpture. Condition: Good vintage condition with significant original character and age-appropriate wear. Evidence of previous paint alterations and removal, including remnants of a spatter-painted finish, areas of underlying yellow paint, exposed metal, oxidation and paint loss. Leather shows expected patina and wear; three slings have had replacement fastener/repair.
