Théodore deck (1823-1891) Impressive Enameled Faïence Vase, circa 1875 Large baluster shape vase with eggplant enameled background Rich hand-painted polychrome decor of two birds resting on a branch, flowers and foliage, Blue Deck glazed frieze at the collar and Celadon at the base. Uppercase Impressed Mark TH.DECK under the vase Bearing an old sticker "Unique Vase by Theodore Deck, Dead" Circa 1875 Renowned ceramist, Théodore Deck born in Guebwiller in 1823, apprenticed in Strasbourg in the pottery of the Hügelin. After an initiatory stay across Europe, he arrives in Paris in 1847. It was in 1861 that he made his first public appearance at the Salon des Arts et de l'Industrie in Paris, where he won a silver medal for his exposed works. Recognized from that time, Deck is deeply influenced by the artistic trend of the moment: Orientalism. He then resumes with great precision the Oriental Naturalist motifs. Emile Reiber (1826-1893), who worked at Christofle as head of the draftsmen, also made sketches for Deck. His fame, won by long journeys, establishes itself at the World’s Fairs in which he participates: in Vienna in 1873, where he leaves all his rivals behind him; in Paris in 1878, where he obtains the grand prize for gold-plated performances. Praised by the critics during the Exhibition of the Central Union of Decorative Arts in 1874, the «Gazette des Beaux-Arts» (Paris, 1874, Vol. XXXV, p° 310) reports that «Mr Deck, the master of masters, is the purest glory of French ceramics». His life is a succession of achievements whose goal is to improve the technology of earthenware. Thus it improves the rendering of colors, among which a new one is featured, a turquoise blue commonly called 'Deck Blue'. Théodore Deck has a lot of time and knows it. However, he does not keep his art to himself, he shares it with other ar-tists and launches young talents without fortune. It thus illustrates the renewal of ceramic art during the second half of the 19th century. All his methods are made public and disseminated in a work on earthenware. His recognized genius, promoted to the rank of Officer of the Legion of Honor, he was appointe in 1887 administrator of the Sèvres factory.

This most attractive vase stands on a flared foot with a tall bulbous body narrowing at the neck to an elegant flared rim. The vase is balanced with two nicely shaped gilt handles. This stunning, rich, hand-painted and gilt Spode porcelain vase is made in an earlier Regency style but dates to circa 1890. The vase has a dark, rich Royal blue ground with fine gilding in the form of leaves, edges and borders. It is boldly painted with beautifully detailed and richly coloured large stylised flowers with pale green foliage.
