About the Item

An impressive vintage English magnum claret jug by James Deakin & Sons, dating to approximately the 1930s and combining hand-blown glass with elaborate silver-plated mounts. The substantial baluster-shaped glass body is finely etched with trailing grapevines and fruit, complemented by a star-cut base. The silver-plated collar, handle and hinged cover are richly worked with repoussé grape and vine decoration, continuing the wine-inspired theme throughout the design. Particularly striking is the sculptural Bacchus mask forming the spout, referencing the Roman god of wine. The hinged lid is crowned by a three-dimensional rampant lion holding a shield, complete with an unengraved cartouche. Marked inside the lid for James Deakin & Sons together with an EPGS (Electro Plated German Silver) mark. The combination of substantial proportions, elaborate metalwork and classical wine symbolism makes this an especially decorative example of English barware. With an approximate two-litre capacity, the jug has considerable presence and would make an impressive addition to a drinks cabinet, dining room or collection of vintage silver plate.
