About the Item

A fine George III sterling silver cream jug by the celebrated silversmiths Peter and Ann Bateman, hallmarked London, 1793. Elegantly modelled in the classic helmet form, the jug stands on a raised square foot and features a graceful reeded handle with finely beaded borders. The body is richly embellished with bright-cut engraved decoration, including floral swags, ribbon motifs and an elegant shaped cartouche to the front, exemplifying the refined neoclassical taste of the late Georgian period. Crafted during one of the most distinguished periods of English silver production, this piece bears clear London hallmarks together with the maker's mark of Peter and Ann Bateman, dating it to 1793. Their work remains highly regarded for its exceptional craftsmanship and enduring elegance. Condition: good antique condition, with light tarnish, polish marks and surface wear consistent with age and use. Please refer to the photographs for full condition details. The upper portion of the body is ornamented with a broad band of bright cut engraved irregular undulating decoration. The body of the jug is embellished with a pin struck and bright cut engraved decorated shield shaped vacant cartouche suspended from a stylized ribbon design. The rim of the body is encompassed with an applied reed decorated border. He surface of the square base is embellished with further bright cut engraved and pin struck leaf motifs and simple paralleling border.
