About the Item

This late 19th-century continental wall plaque is executed in silver-plated repoussé over a copper alloy base, with finely chased detailing throughout. The central composition features a heraldic shield surmounted by a coronet and flanked by two lions, forming a formal emblematic focal point. Surrounding the centre are four oval reserves containing allegorical female figures, integrated into a dense field of scrolling foliate ornament. The outer border is completed by a continuous hunting frieze, adding narrative movement and reinforcing the decorative complexity of the design. The surface is worked in high relief using traditional repoussé and chasing techniques, creating depth and definition across the figures, foliage, and architectural elements. The overall design reflects the Renaissance Revival tradition popular in late 19th-century Germany and Northern Italy, where historic motifs were reinterpreted into elaborate decorative metalwork intended for display interiors.
