About the Item

A finely cast 19th-century silver-plated model of the celebrated Temperance Dish, after the renowned late Renaissance design by François Briot (French, 1550–1615 or later). Inspired by Briot's iconic pewter basin produced in Montbéliard during the late 16th century, this impressive decorative object exemplifies the rich allegorical imagery and masterful relief work that made the original one of the most admired creations of the Renaissance. The circular dish features a raised central boss centered by the allegorical figure of Temperance, one of the four cardinal virtues, depicted holding a wine cup and ewer as she prepares to dilute wine with water, symbolizing moderation and self-restraint. Surrounding her are four oval medallions representing the classical elements—Air, Water, Earth, and Fire—over which Temperance presides. The broad rim is richly ornamented with eight further relief panels illustrating the Seven Liberal Arts: Grammar, Dialectic, Rhetoric, Music, Arithmetic, Geometry, and Astrology, accompanied by a depiction of Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom. The panels are separated by elaborate Renaissance strapwork incorporating masks, winged creatures, birds, and mythological motifs. A gadrooned border enhances both the central boss and outer rim, adding depth and refinement to the overall composition. The design is closely associated with the famous Temperantia basin, a variation of which serves as the inspiration for the sterling silver and parcel-gilt "Venus Rosewater Dish" presented annually to the Ladies' Singles Champion at Wimbledon. That presentation piece was produced by Elkington & Co. of Birmingham in 1864. This example, although unmarked, is of exceptional quality, featuring a substantial brass backing and fitted hardware for wall display. Based on its craftsmanship, construction, and finish, it was very likely produced by Elkington & Co. during the last quarter of the 19th century. An impressive and highly decorative Renaissance Revival piece, ideal for wall mounting and display.
