About the Item

Set of Twelve Sarreguemines French Majolica Oyster Plates in Olive Green Glaze This set of twelve Sarreguemines French majolica oyster plates celebrates the enduring French tradition of seafood service with a beautifully sculptural design that is as decorative as it is functional. Produced by the renowned Sarreguemines pottery in France during the early to mid-20th century, each plate is molded with six deeply ribbed scallop shell wells arranged around a raised central sauce reservoir, creating the classic presentation for serving fresh oysters with mignonette, cocktail sauce, or lemon wedges. Founded in 1790, the Sarreguemines faience works became one of France's most respected ceramic manufacturers, earning an international reputation for finely molded majolica wares distinguished by rich glazes, naturalistic forms, and exceptional craftsmanship. These oyster plates continue that tradition, their bold shell relief inspired directly by nature. The glossy olive-green glaze pools into the recessed ribs and highlights the raised surfaces, producing dramatic tonal variations ranging from moss green to deep forest hues. The effect is both elegant and organic, perfectly suited to French country, coastal, or traditional interiors. Complete services of twelve matching oyster plates have become increasingly difficult to find, making this an especially desirable offering for collectors of French majolica, antique tableware, or designers creating sophisticated entertaining settings. Beyond their intended use, the plates display beautifully as wall art or cabinet pieces, where their sculptural quality and vibrant glaze become decorative focal points. Each example retains the printed Sarreguemines France mark on the reverse and demonstrates the high-quality molding and glazing for which the factory became famous. Their timeless design bridges the Victorian fascination with naturalism and the refined elegance of twentieth-century French tableware, making them equally appropriate for formal dining or display. Dimensions (each): 9-inch diameter Condition: Very good vintage condition with light surface wear consistent with age and careful use. Attractive, even glazed with expected age-related crazing typical of vintage French majolica. All twelve examples retain their Sarreguemines, France, backstamp and present as a beautifully matched service.
