English Pearlware Blue and White Six-Compartment Tray, Angry Lion Pattern Circa 1815–20 This unusual pearlware tray offers six chances to admire one of the great rarities of English blue and white: the Angry Lion pattern, printed in underglaze blue within each of the six recessed compartments of the well. The design is famously strange — a powerful, glowering lion planted in the middle of a tranquil English park, a country house with a round, flag-flying gatehouse tower beyond, thick woodland closing in at both sides, and a small mounted figure with laden panniers climbing a steep path at the left. The rectangular tray stands on bracket feet at each corner and carries a plain loop handle at either short end, its exterior wrapped in a rich dark blue border of scrolling acanthus reserved with cartouches of the horseman and further landscape vignettes with Chinoiserie pavilions. Like virtually all recorded examples of the pattern, the tray bears no maker's mark, and the compartmented form points to specialized service — condiments or sweetmeats at the Regency dining table. Historical Context Blue transfer-printed pearlware — Wedgwood's cobalt-tinged refinement of creamware, introduced in 1779 — dominated the English table by the early nineteenth century, produced in enormous variety across Staffordshire. The Angry Lion stands apart as one of the rarest and most debated patterns of the whole repertoire, its jarring image of a ferocious lion loose in a peaceful landscape read variously as patriotic symbolism or oblique Regency commentary; its maker has never been identified. The pattern is known in several variants, some with a wider composition including additional figures at the right. (Ref: NY10182)
