About the Item

An elegant and highly decorative George IV / Regency period sterling silver egg cruet stand by the respected London silversmith William Burwash, hallmarked London circa 1820. The shaped rectangular stand features beautifully chased foliate and gadrooned decoration, raised on ornate paw feet with shell and acanthus motifs. It supports six removable urn-shaped egg cups with gilt (gold-washed) interiors and matching gadrooned rims. A finely cast central foliate handle allows easy carrying to the table. Hallmarks: Clearly struck on the base with William Burwash’s “WB” maker’s mark, London leopard’s head, lion passant, duty mark, and date letter for the period. The cups also carry matching or partial marks. Dimensions: Base: 8" × 6" (20.3 × 15.2 cm) Height (including handle): 8" (20.3 cm) Weight (including cups) 32 troy oz (995 grams) This is a classic and complete Regency breakfast table piece of excellent quality and weight. William Burwash is well-documented for producing fine silver in partnership with Richard Sibley and later independently; his work is sought after by collectors and appears in major auction houses and museum collections.
